How to get clients for a marketing agency

Updated

How to get clients for a marketing agency: pick one niche and one city, build a short list of local businesses and lead with a free audit. Send personal cold emails in small batches, answer replies fast and practise the sales call. RoboMarketer can draft the emails and call scripts, and you approve each one.

Find. One niche, one city, a list from Google Maps.
Find the reason. One real problem, in their customers' words.
Ask, personally. A short email you approve before it sends.

The most reliable way for a new or small agency to get clients is targeted outreach: one niche in one city, a specific reason to contact each business, and a fast answer to every reply. Referrals and content help too, but outreach is the channel you control from week one.

How do you go from zero to a signed client?

Everything here works by hand. Where RoboMarketer can do part of the work, the note under each step says how.

Step 1

Pick a niche you can win

"Marketing for anyone" is hard to sell, because your emails can't say anything specific. A niche makes your list one search and your emails specific.

  • What you can deliver. Good at Meta ads? Pick a niche that buys leads through ads.
  • Who needs it. Weak websites, few reviews, no ads running: that's demand.
  • Who can pay. High value per customer can afford a retainer.

Niche Positioning checks real local businesses and recommends a best niche plus 2 backups, each with a suggested price, angle and offer. The first scan is free.

Step 2

Build a local prospect list

Search your niche plus your city on Google Maps ("roofer Denver") and note each business, website and category. Keep the first list small enough to work through properly.

Mark what stands out: no website, a site that breaks on a phone, strong reviews but no online booking. Those notes become your emails.

Find clients takes a city and a niche and finds local businesses from Google Maps data. See Google Maps lead generation.

Step 3

Lead with a free audit

Open with something useful about their business, not a pitch about yours. Does the site load fast, is it clear what they do, can a visitor call or book in one tap? Put the one finding that matters most in your first email.

Find clients audits each prospect's site and reads its reviews. Lead magnets also put free AI website audits on your own domain, so visitors become leads.

Step 4

Send personal cold emails, not blasts

Name the business. Mention the one finding. Say what you'd do about it in one sentence. Ask one easy question. Plain text, few links, no attachments.

Every drafted email waits for your approval. Approved emails send through your Gmail for smaller volumes or your Instantly workspace for large lists. Replies come back to the inbox you sent from.

Step 5

Reply fast and book calls

Interest fades fast. A good reply answers their question, gives one next step, usually a short call, and includes a booking link.

If they push back ("we already have someone"), ask one question before you let it go.

Leads sync into your RoboMarketer CRM, with a pipeline and a booking calendar. Robo Coach drafts replies to leads.

Step 6

Practise the sales call

  • Opener. Thank them, confirm the time, say what you'll cover.
  • Questions. Goals, what they've tried, what's not working. Listen more than you talk.
  • Offer. Tie it to what they said. One offer, one price.
  • Next step. Agree what happens and when.

Robo Coach briefs you on the lead, writes the script, plays the prospect in a practice call, then scores you.

Step 7

Send a proposal and agreement

Send a short proposal soon after a good call: their problem in their words, what you'll do, the price and how to start. Put scope, price, payment terms, length and how to end it in a written agreement, every time.

Robo Coach drafts proposals and client agreements as Word files. They are templates, not legal advice. Once a client signs, bill a retainer or per outcome through your own Stripe.

What should you do before you send cold email?

Cold email works when it's personal and sent in small batches. It fails when you blast one template from a brand new inbox.

Set up your sending domain
Many agencies send from a separate domain. Add SPF, DKIM and DMARC so providers can verify you.
Warm up new inboxes
Start with a few emails a day and raise the volume slowly over several weeks.
Keep volume small per inbox
Spread sending across days and inboxes. Steady beats bursts.
Follow CAN-SPAM in the US
Accurate From and subject lines, a valid postal address, a clear opt-out, honored promptly. It applies to B2B email too.
Check the rules where prospects are
CASL in Canada, GDPR and PECR in the EU and UK. This guide is not legal advice.
Follow up, then stop
One or two polite follow-ups are normal. If someone says no, remove them.

How many clients do you need?

Monthly goal ÷ price per client = clients you need.

A $10,000 goal at $1,000 a client means 10 clients. At $2,000, it's 5. Then work back to weekly emails, replies and calls, using your own reply and close rates once you have a few weeks of data.

RoboMarketer's revenue goal does the sum and turns it into a weekly plan, counted from your real activity. It's a goal and a plan, not an earnings promise.

What are other ways to get agency clients?

Outreach is the one you can start today. Pick one or two of these to keep doing every week as you grow.

ReferralsAsk happy clients and your network to introduce youOften the warmest leads, but you need clients first

Questions

What is the fastest way to get your first agency client?

Pick one niche and one city, contact businesses one by one with a personal reason, and follow up. RoboMarketer's Find clients builds the list, reads each website and drafts the email. You approve each email.

Should a new agency pick a niche?

Yes. A niche makes your offer and emails specific. Niche Positioning suggests a best niche plus 2 backups, each with a price, angle and offer. The first scan is free.

Is cold email still worth it for agencies?

It works best when it's personal and sent in small batches. Larger lists should go through warmed-up inboxes, for example an Instantly workspace. Always include an opt-out and your postal address.

How many cold emails do I need to send?

Work back from your goal. Divide your monthly income goal by your price per client, then plan weekly emails, replies and calls from your own rates. RoboMarketer's revenue goal turns a target and a price into that weekly plan.

What should a sales call script include?

An opener, discovery questions, one clear offer and an agreed next step. Robo Coach writes scripts, practises the call with you as the prospect, then scores you.

Do I need a contract?

Use a written agreement for every client. Robo Coach drafts proposals and client agreements as Word templates. They are templates, not legal advice.
