What is an SMMA?
SMMA stands for social media marketing agency. It is a business that runs social media for other companies: posts, paid social ads, community replies and reports, usually for a monthly fee.

A client who can see the work renews the next month
An SMMA (social media marketing agency) is a business that manages social media for other businesses. It plans and posts content, runs paid ads on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, answers comments and messages, and reports on results. Clients usually pay a monthly retainer. Some are one person working from home. Others are larger teams.
The term got popular in online business circles as a way to start a service business with little upfront cost. That part is true: you need a laptop and skills, not an office. The hard part is the same as at any agency: getting clients, then keeping them.
How an SMMA works
An SMMA sells a social media service to a business, then delivers it every month. The cycle looks the same for most agencies, whatever their size.
Find a client
The agency finds businesses that need help with social media, often through cold outreach, referrals or its own content.
Agree on an offer and price
Both sides agree what the agency will do (for example, three posts a week and one ad campaign), what the client provides and what it costs.
Onboard
The client gives access to its social accounts and ad account, plus brand details like logo, tone and photos.
Deliver every week
The agency plans content, drafts posts and ads, gets client approval where needed, and publishes.
Report and renew
Once a week or a month, the agency shows the client what happened and what comes next. A client who can see what you did is easier to keep.
What services does an SMMA offer?
Most SMMAs offer some mix of organic content and paid ads. The common services:
- Content: a calendar, plus posts and captions for each channel, scheduled and published.
- Paid social: ad campaigns on Meta (Facebook and Instagram), TikTok or other platforms, including targeting, creative and budget changes.
- Creative: post images, ad creatives, and scripts and edits for short-form video.
- Community management, meaning replies to comments and direct messages.
- A regular report on reach and engagement, and for ads, spend, leads and cost per lead.
- A monthly plan tied to the client's goals.
New agencies usually do better offering one or two of these well than all of them at once. "We run Facebook and Instagram ads for dentists" is easier to sell than "we do everything social".
How do SMMAs get paid?
SMMAs usually charge a fixed monthly retainer. A few other models are common too.
| Model | How it works | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | Fixed fee every month for an agreed scope | Steady income, ongoing content and ads | Scope creep if the scope isn't written down |
| Project fee | One-off price for a set piece of work | Account setup, a launch, a content batch | Income stops when the project ends |
| Pay per result | Paid per lead, booking or other outcome | Clients who want low risk | You carry the risk if results are slow |
| Hybrid | Smaller retainer plus a per-result fee | Balancing risk on both sides | Needs clear tracking both sides trust |
Ad spend is usually separate. The client pays the ad platform directly, and the agency charges for managing it.
Prices vary a lot by niche, location, scope and experience, so there is no standard SMMA price. Work out what your time and tools cost, then set a price the client's results can justify.

How to start an SMMA
To start an SMMA, pick one service and one niche, package it as an offer with a price, and contact businesses one by one until you sign your first client.
Pick one service
Choose the thing you can already do well, such as Meta ads or content for Instagram. Learn on your own accounts or a friendly business first if you have no experience.
Pick a niche
Choose one type of business in one area, like gyms in Austin or roofers in Denver. It makes your offer, examples and emails specific. Our agency niche finder guide covers how to choose.
Write the offer
Say what the client gets, how often, what they need to give you and what it costs. Keep it to a few lines.
Set up the basics
Register the business as your local rules require, open a separate bank account, and get a proposal and a written client agreement ready.
Find your first clients
Build a list of local businesses in your niche, contact each one with a personal reason, follow up and run sales calls. See how to get clients for a marketing agency.
Deliver and report
Do the work on a schedule, send a short report, and ask happy clients for referrals.

Common SMMA mistakes
Most SMMAs that struggle make one of a few avoidable mistakes.
- No niche. Selling to "any business" makes every email generic, and generic emails get ignored.
- Too many services too soon. Offering content, ads, video, websites and SEO on day one spreads you thin. Start with one service you can deliver well.
- Mass cold emails. Blasting one template to thousands of people from a new inbox burns your domain and rarely works. Personal emails in small batches do better. Follow CAN-SPAM in the US: accurate headers, a postal address and a working opt-out.
- No written agreement. Write down scope, price, payment terms and how either side can end the work, even with a friendly client.
- Weak reporting. If the client can't see what you did and what it led to, they will question the retainer.
- Promising results you can't control. Don't guarantee follower counts, leads or sales. Promise the work and report honestly on what it produces.
- Doing all the delivery by hand. Busywork piles up and outreach is the first thing to slip. Set up schedules, templates and tools early.
Pros and cons of running an SMMA
An SMMA has real upsides and real downsides. Here's how they stack up.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Low startup cost: skills and a laptop | Getting clients is hard, especially at first |
| Recurring monthly revenue once clients sign | Clients can leave at the end of any month |
| Work from anywhere | Platforms change rules and algorithms often |
| Skills you can learn and prove on real accounts | Lots of competition, including freelancers |
| Can grow by adding clients, people or tools | Delivery can eat the time you need for sales |
It suits people who like both the creative work and the selling. If you only want to make content and never talk to business owners, freelancing for an existing agency may fit better.

An SMMA is a type of digital marketing agency that focuses on social media. A digital marketing agency may also do SEO, email, websites or search ads.

You need to be able to deliver the service you sell. Many people practise on their own accounts or a local business first, then charge once they can show the work.
How much does it cost to start an SMMA?
Very little compared with most businesses: mainly your time, business registration and the tools you choose. The bigger cost is the time it takes to find clients.
How do SMMAs find clients?
Mostly cold outreach, referrals and their own content. Picking one niche and one city and contacting businesses personally is a common start. RoboMarketer's Find clients builds the list, audits each website and drafts the emails for your approval.
Is SMMA a get-rich-quick business?
No. It is a service business. It takes time to find clients and do work good enough to keep them. Anyone promising guaranteed income is selling you something.
Can AI run an SMMA for you?
AI can draft a lot of the work: posts, captions, ad sets and reports. In RoboMarketer every draft still waits for a human to approve it, and you still run the client relationships.
